MR. KERR’S CABINET-MAKING STUDENTS COMPLETE CABINETS FOR CONCESSION STAND

December 09, 2024

Ness City High School’s cafeteria is sporting a fresh new look, thanks to the hard work and craftsmanship of Mr. Kerr’s cabinet-making students. The group recently completed a custom set of cabinets for the concession stand, just in time for the first home basketball game of the season. The project, which began last year, was temporarily put on hold as students focused their efforts on an ambitious tiny house build. With the tiny house completed, the class returned to the concession stand project this fall, determined to finish the job before basketball season kicked off. The result is a beautiful and functional addition to the school’s cafeteria, complete with sleek storage solutions and a professional finish.

“It’s exciting to see our work being used by the school and the community,” said senior Blake Madden, who helped lead the project. “We’ve learned so much, and it’s rewarding to see it all come together.”

The cabinets feature Oak doors and drawer fronts and an efficient design, with several pull outs for roasters, crockpots, and other utensils used in the concession stand; these cabinets were tailor made to meet the needs of the concession stand. Students practiced a range of skills, including precise measuring, cutting, assembling, and finishing techniques, to ensure the project met high standards. Mr. Kerr praised his students’ dedication and teamwork. “

This project has been a great learning experience for them. They’ve developed technical skills and an understanding of how to manage a long-term project,” he said. “It’s also meaningful for them to contribute something tangible to the school.”

The cabinets made their debut at the season’s first basketball game, receiving compliments from staff and spectators alike. The students craftsmanship was on full display—a testament to their hard work and the strength of the school’s vocational education program. A big thanks from Mr. Kerr to all the students who took time working on such a large undertaking Selflessly knowing they could have all been working on something for themselves. Your time and dedication to this project has not been overlooked.
