Senior Artist Receives Recognition

Summer Rupp, a senior in her fourth year of art, is one of three recipients of the Harry Hart Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is made available through the Kansas Art Education Association and is awarded to three seniors each year in the state of Kansas that plan to major in art post secondary. Art teachers in the state that are a part of KAEA can submit one senior per year for this scholarship. Teachers submit a small portfolio of the student’s art work for consideration.

Summer was entered this year for the scholarship by her art teacher, Ms. Wiens. Ms. Wiens has been thoroughly impressed with Summer’s artwork, noting her skill and dedication to her art practice both in and out of the art room. On top of creating at school, she spends her personal time creating art, painting windows around town, and she has even been commissioned to paint murals in Ness City.

Along with winning the Harry Hart Memorial Scholarship, Summer currently has work on display at the Stauth Museum in Montezuma, Kansas and in Topeka, Kansas at the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library.

Summer entered into the Scholastic art show, a prestigious art and writing competition. Out of the 13 art pieces entered, she received one Honorable Mention award, two Silver Key awards, and one Gold Key award. Her Gold Key winning piece will move onto national judging with results being announced later this month. These pieces are on display in Montezuma at the museum.

In Topeka, Summer is taking part in Youth Art Month, a month-long celebration of young artists. She has one piece on display as a part of the Youth Art Month display. On Saturday, March 28th at the Youth Art Month celebration in Topeka, Summer will have additional pieces of artwork on display. This display is to show off her art for winning the scholarship. Anyone that will be in those areas are encouraged to view her work. The Topeka display will run through March 28th and the Montezuma display will run through March 25th.
